Days out with the Kids – As a family we love exploring Somerset.
A trip to Brean Down was a perfect place for children and dogs to run and play and us to learn about the fort.
The national trust site starts with a beach perfect for games, (we used to meet our extended family here for the annual hockey match). It is a lovely dog walking beach and also has small rock pools, ideal for young children to explore. This beach is not good for swimming.
To walk up onto Brean Down Fort 1st you have to climb up a lot of steps, we lost count at around 50.
The walk along the top of Brean Down is beautiful with spectacular 360 views. looking south to the Quantocks and Weston Super Mare to the north.
If you are lucky when walking the Downs you might see the goats and cows that are wandering the moor.
The Fort was interesting for us all to explore and had information on the people who used to live there, it was in active use until after the second world war and is now owned by the National Trust.
We helped the national trust volunteers shoo the cows out of the Fort as apparently the cows love to explore the fort also !!
After retracing our steps and descending the stairs back to the start we recommend cake or ice-cream in one of the 2 coffee shops (1 national trust and 1 locally owned), We even found we could buy a dog ice-cream for Basil our dog. A perfect end to a lovely day.
