We’ve welcomed seventeen very talented Italian students (and their brilliant teachers!) who’ve chosen Walkers Farm Cottages for a three week English Language Holiday…its been a priviledge and a lot of fun! Our thanks to Sandra, Jason, Jamie, Izzie, Arianna and Sandra’s wider team at www.englishlanguageholiday.co.uk who’ve used Walkers Farm Cottages as their accommodation and teaching base for the first time this year….we hope there are many more to come.
We’ve marvelled at Sandra’s action packed programme, incorporating activities, visits and day trips, lessons, workshops, team building events and we’ve loved playing our small part in some of the logistics! Sandra’s belief that a variety of different experiences and contexts develop language skills can only have strengthened the English language skills of some already brilliantly capable young Italians. They’ve met Stoke St Gregory Beavers, Cubs & Scouts (all of whom in turn received their language badges after three evening bbq’s and rounders matches), visited a local dairy farm to see cows being milked, learnt how to make ice cream, built their own traditional pizza oven from cob and cooked their own pizzas, learnt about metal detecting, been to a traditional Somerset Barn Dance, competed in a sports day…and all that’s just been on our doorstep! The group have been away on numerous excursions and activity days, been surfing, walking, kayaking (and even found parts of hidden Somerset we didn’t know about!)
Catering has been on a grand scale…think how much any hungry teenager consumes in a day!! From our Bull Pen Function Room kitchen, Sandra and her team turned out three fantastic meals each day every day, plus snacks and treats for 17 children, 5 plus staff…and even spoilt numerous of our visitors! True Italian hospitality! From BBQ’s and hot dogs for up to 70 children(!) to English cream teas, fabulous pasta and beautifully smooth espresso coffee, its been a pleasure to watch and a treat to eat!
Our complex and facilities have worked brilliantly as a pop up language school, particularly our all weather games barn which has doubled up as a classroom and learning space.
An emotional (and in some cases tearful!) departure was a pretty good indicator that a good time was had by all. We’ll certainly missed the fun, enthusiasm and energy from the group….and we hope to see you all again next year! Thanks to everybody locally who has been involved and who has helped us to provide a glimpse of rural life in Somerset to our Italian friends. Particular thanks to Sandra and all at English Language Holidays for choosing Walkers Farm Cottages.
